There's this saying: "Don't follow wise men. Try to figure out what they're searching for."

You have two choices:

1) go down the beaten path everyone else is trotting down

2) figure out a way to add a very personal [aka different] stamp to games

It's up to you. For a first try, not bad at all. But, like I said before, try to come up with something not done before.

Kudos to you, good sir, for at least trying to make a game and be honest about your shortcomings. It takes guts to do that.
